Adam Edwin Fernand, 51, Danbury Police Officer

NEW FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Adam Edwin Fernand, a New Fairfield resident, died unexpectedly on Dec. 1 at Yale New Haven Hospital, following a brief illness.

Fernand's distinguished career as a Danbury Police Officer lasted 29 years, as he rose from the ranks of rookie officer at age 21 to Detective Sergeant, retiring in July of 2014. During his tenure on the police force, he was Team Leader of the Special Weapons and Tactics Team, as well as part of the Tactical Narcotics Team.

He was predeceased by his mother, Patricia Molloy Fernand. 

He was the recipient of numerous awards and citations as he served the city. Adam and his family were members of St. Edward the Confessor Church in New Fairfield.Survived by his wife of 25 years, Valerie Sforza Fernand; his children, Ava, 15, and Kyle, 14, all of New Fairfield; siblings, Lori Fernand and husband Michael, Greg Fernand and his wife Mary, Mark Fernand, Michael Fernand and his wife Susan, and Amy Fernand Boulton and her husband Wayne; step-sister, Debbie Finan and her husband William, step-brothers, Greg Straiton, and Brian Straiton and his wife Eileen; and many other in-laws, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

About two weeks ago, family members set up a fund on Giveforward to help pay for his medical expenses.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5 at St. Edward the Confessor Church, New Fairfield. The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m on Friday, Dec.4 at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main Street, Danbury. 

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Fernand Family Fund.
