Bertha Gertrude Bender Hospodar, 92, Of Danbury, Registered Nurse

DANBURY, Conn. - Bertha “Gert” Gertrude Bender Hospodar of Danbury, and long-time resident of Stamford, died June 6. She was 92.

Hospodar was born in McKeesport, Pa., to Emma (Kline) and Sylvester Bender. She graduated from St. Peter's Catholic High School, and went on to earn a RN degree from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing. She joined the U.S. Army and served as a first lieutenant nurse. She was stationed in England during World War II.

Hospodar lived in Stamford in the same house in the Cove section for over 65 years. She was a volunteer in her community. Cub Scout den mother and Girl Scout /Brownie Leader and a member of the Rosary Altar Society at St. Benedict's Church.

Hospodar is survived by her children, Michael (Sandy) Hospodar of Stamford, Peggy Kennedy (Gary Woker) of Escondido, Calif., Patricia Wisniewski of Danbury, Paul Hospodar (Karen) of Trumbull and KathyAnne Thompson (Matthew) of North Olmsted, Ohio; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents; husband, Joseph F. Hospodar; and sister, Audrey (Larry) Marzaloes.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 13 at St. Benedict’s in Stamford. A reception will follow at Knights of Columbus at 2 p.m. for friends and family. Final interment will take place in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
