Danbury Native Richard 'Beetle' Bailey, Beloved FD Chaplain, Dies

Richard J. Bailey, Sr., the longtime chaplain of the Brewster Fire Department, died Sunday, June 3, at home.

Bailey, 87, of Dover Plains, also worked for years as a tree surgeon at Coffin Tree Service in Tarrytown.

Born on February 18, 1931, in Danbury, he was the son of the late Myron A. and Blanche Bailey. He was married to Cynthia L. Ashby Bailey who predeceased him. 

"It is with deep sadness that the Brewster Fire Department announces the passing of our Chaplain, Richard "Beetle" Bailey," the fire department said on Facebook. "Members are asked to keep Beetle's family in their thoughts and prayers."

Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, at the Hufcut Funeral Home, 3159 Route 22, Dover Plains. Graveside services and burial will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday at Wooster Cemetery, 20 Ellsworth Ave., Danbury.
