Danbury's Bernard Scalzo, 97, WWII Veteran, Worked For Berol

DANBURY, Conn. - Bernard Scalzo of Danbury died Thursday, Feb. 13. He was 97.

Scalzo was born in San Bernardo, Italy. He joined the U.S. Army in June 1941 and served in the North African campaign. He was discharged Aug. 30, 1945, and received a World Ware II Victory medal, and a European, African and Middle Eastern Campaign medal.

He worked in Danbury as a hatter for the former Mallory Hat Factory and then for Berol Corp. for many years.

Scalzo is survived by his wife, Catherine (Loschiavo) Scalzo; sons, Raymond of Danbury and Richard (Sylvia) of Trumbull; two grandsons; and extended family in the U.S. and Australia.

Calling hours are Wednesday, Feb. 19, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19, at St. Joseph Church, Danbury. Burial will follow in St. Peter Cemetery, Danbury.
