Dennis I. Elpern, 69, Retired Planning Director In Danbury

DANBURY, Conn. -- Dennis I. Elpern, of Danbury, who retired recently as the city planning director in Danbury, died on Friday, Dec. 24. He was 69.

He was the husband of Joanne M. ( Mantz) Elpern. 

He was born in Chicago, to Thelma and Melvin Elpern. He moved frequently as a child and ultimately graduated from Boyertown Area High School in Boyertown, Pa., in 1964. 

From there, he went on to earn a bachelor's degree in 1968 from the School of Government and Public Administration at American University in Washington, D.C. 

He and his high school sweetheart, Joanne, were married in 1969. They began life together in Harrisburg, Pa., where he received his master's degree in urban and regional planning from Pennsylvania State University. 

He began his professional career as a member of the planning staff of the Centre Regional Planning Commission in State College, Pa., eventually becoming director. 

In 1988, he accepted the position of Planning Director of Danbury and retired Nov. 1. 

Friends will be received Tuesday, Dec. 29, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury. Interment will be at the convenience of the family.
