DANBURY, Conn. – Harriet Ann (Geidel) Mangels, 96, of Littleton, N.H., formerly of Danbury, died Dec. 30 at Grafton County Nursing Home, in North Haverhill, N.H.
She was the widow of Robert D. Mangels.
Born in the Bronx, on Feb. 25, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Alfred and Sarah (Stafford) Geidel. She graduated from high school in 1936. After graduating, she went to work to help the family through the Depression and war years.
Following the war, while working at American Can Company, she met and later married Robert D. Mangels on May 24, 1947. While raising her family in Hicksville, N.Y. she was active at St. Stephen's Church and with the American Legion Auxiliary. After moving to Danbury in 1968, she joined St. Paul's Church and later the Danbury Drum Corps Auxiliary, She took classes to obtain a driver's license at age 51.
She returned to American Can (then in Greenwich) for a few years. She and her husband both retired in 1976. Later, they joined King Street Church, and took part in the choir, special chorus and annual plays. Together, they tutored at a local school and added senior bowling leagues to their many activities
Her husband died in 2007.
Harriet moved to Riverglen House in Littleton, N.H. in April 2012, then moved to The Morrison Nursing Home in Whitefield, N.H., and finally to Grafton County Nursing Home in North Haverhill in December 2014.
She is survived by her sons William H. Mangels, II of Las Vegas; Robert A. Mangels (Carole) of South Hadley, Massachusetts; Thomas R. Mangels (Linda) of Colebrook, New Hampshire; grandchildren Robert, James, Brian-Jack and Barbara Mangels; Scott Mosher; and Amy Sullivan-Martini; great grandchildren Ramey and Meggie Harper-Mangels; Jared and Julius Sullivan; and Jamie Martini; nieces Carol Anglace, Lynn Rios and Beatrice Shandro; nephews Peter Sherbo; Edgar, James, Clifford and Michael Taylor; and some very special friends.
Her sisters Florence Sherbo and Adelaide Taylor, predeceased her.
The funeral will be held at the King Street United Church of Christ in Danbury on Tuesday, Jan. 6 at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Wooster Cemetery, Danbury. The family will receive friends at the Hull Funeral Home, 60 Division St. in Danbury on Monday, Jan. 5 from 6-9 p.m.
