DANBURY, Conn. - Michael Skandera of Danbury died Friday, March 28. He was 89.

Skandera was born in Danbury, he was the son of Daniel and Elizabeth (Holick) Skandera. He was a graduate of Danbury High School and the former Danbury State Teachers College. He went on to receive his Ed.D. from Teachers College of Columbia University in New York City, and was a master teacher in Ridgefield public schools for 45 years.

A captain in the U.S. Army Air Force, he was a 50-mission bomber pilot in World War II. He was a longtime member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, where he served as superintendent of the Sunday school, and a longtime member of Danbury Sokol Lodge #30, where he served as a vice-president. He was a member of the Ridgewood Country Club.

Skandera is survived by his wife, Anne (Parnas) Skandera; sons, Mark Skandera of Bethlehem, Pa., and Randall Skandera of Danbury; brother, Emil Skandera of Danbury; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; brothers, John and Daniel Skandera; and sisters, Elizabeth Van Geons and Anne Curesky.

Calling hours are Tuesday, April 1 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Green Funeral Home , 57 Main St., Danbury. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 2 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 44 Spring St., Danbury. Interment will follow at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Skandera’s memory may be made to Regional Hospice and Home Care of Western Connecticut, 39 Old Ridgebury Road, PO Box 2387, Danbury, CT 06813-9971, or to a charity of your choice.
