Shawn Johnson, 37, Danbury Educator

DANBURY, Conn. — Shawn Johnson, a Danbury resident and teacher in the city's school system, died Thursday, July 30, at the age of 37.

Johnson grew up in Newtown and graduated cum laude from Western Connecticut State University, where he studied elementary education and psychology. He was an educator in the Danbury School System for the past several years.

He was inspired by Maria Montessori's philosophy of education and was particularly interested in the psychology of learning. His love of knowledge extended beyond the classroom, as he was an avid reader with a special interest in history and science.

Johnson was an animal lover and had many beloved pets.

He is survived by his fiancé Jessica Bilyard of Danbury; mother Cheryl Johnson of Newtown; father and stepmother David and Marie Johnson of Newtown; sisters Amanda Johnson of Colorado Springs, Kristina Marciano of Newtown, and Andrea Rosenthal alng with her husband Gabe, and their two sons, Reese and Luke, of Half Moon Bay; maternal grandmother, Agnes McCarthy of Waterbury; and a large extended family.

A memorial celebrating Shawn's life will be held on Tuesday Aug. 4, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street in Newtown.
