To the editor:
At last week's Ridgefield LWV Debate for the 138th State Legislative District, Jan Giegler deliberately misspoke about her NO vote on SB 1160, the post-Sandy Hook Gun Safety bill. When asked how she voted, she responded, "I did not vote because I was a member of the committee" that created the bill.
Her official voting record shows that she voted NO on this bill. She was the only one of the local Republican delegation who voted NO.
Someone called out from the audience to correct her --she definitely heard it but did not correct herself.
Several people who attended this forum corroborated what I have written here.
She has in the past admitted that she voted AGAINST the bill -- though for a different reason. She claimed she voted against the bill because it did not address mental health treatment. In fact, according to Daniela Giordano, the policy director at NAMI-CT (National Alliance for the Mentally Ill--CY chapter), the bill did quite a bit to address early detection and treatment of mental illness.
She claims that the bill was pushed through at the last minute and that the CT State Troopers did not have a say in the matter. I know that this is false from having sat in several of the hearings on public safety, including the one where the State of CT's Chief of Emergency Services supported passage of gun law reform.
She has misrepresented herself to voters of our district and she really needs to be called out on it. Why is she so evasive about her NO vote?
