The Parent Trust Fund is, once again, on the list of budget cuts for the next two fiscal years. Such a cut would eliminate funding for the Parent Leadership Training Institute (PLTI), and other civic programs that teach leadership to the community.
Governor Dannel Malloy’s diagnosis that the state is in “terrible, terrible, terrible trouble” is not an ailment that is effectively remedied through tax hikes, transportation reconstruction and corporate welfare giveaways. Our economy is in trouble because The People are not provided with adequate means to create change.
The People are ill-advised, ill-equipped and ill-prepared to make progressive economic decisions.
Most government programs are established through pet-projects that serve politicians, which is why these programs fail. PLTI programs are created by The People, for The People; and typically do not involve taxes. Surely, Malloy would better serve the state by delegating responsibilities to the 3.6 million people living in Connecticut.
Rather than cutting the Parent Trust Fund and eliminating civic programs such as PLTI, Malloy should promote civic programs as the gateway to progress. The Parent Trust Fund should receive more funding to expand the efforts of PLTI, and increase community involvement in the process of improving our economy.
3.6 million heads are better than one. The People know what they need better than any politician. Malloy’s “grown up conversation” about the budget should include all Connecticut residents; and not just a piddly few politicians, business owners and political junkies.
We all are the source of economic decline, and we all should play a role in recovery.
