REDDING, Conn. -- A fire destroyed a barn, killed five chickens and briefly shut down traffic on Route 58 in Redding on Friday.

Firefighters responded to 128 Black Rock Turnpike in Redding at around 11 a.m. Friday on a report of a barn fire, according to the Stony Hill Volunteer Fire Company. In addition to Redding firefighters, mutual aid was called in from Stony Hill, Bethel, Brookfield, and Danbury, according to the News-Times.

Traffic was briefly closed on Route 58/Black Rock Turnpike in the area while crews worked to extinguish the fire and overhaul the structure. The road was reopened at around 12:20 p.m.

The homeowners had moved their chickens into the barn Thursday evening because of the freezing temperatures overnight, and five birds were killed, according to the News-Times.
