Bethel Cops: Man Borrows Vehicle, Uses It As Battering Ram To Free His Car

BETHEL, Conn. -- A Middletown man borrowed someone else's vehicle without permission and used it as a battering ram Monday morning to free his own vehicle, Bethel Police said.

His car had become stuck in a bush near a home at 50 Maple Ave. the night before, police said.

Perhaps not surprisingly, one of the charges that Richard Gilbert, 49, of 102 Crystal Lake Road is facing is operating under the influence. He's also charged with first-degree mischief and disorderly conduct.

Officers were called to the Maple Avenue residence shortly before 10 a.m. on a report of someone ramming another vehicle repeatedly, police said. Officers found Gilbert in his own vehicle, while the second vehicle had extensive damage, police said.

He posted $1,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 9
