The victim walked into Danbury Police Department Jan. 19 and said he rented an apartment from a couple who were posing as the owners.

The Poets Landing apartment on Hayestown Road was listed on Craigslist and the victim told police he went to see it twice before renting it and moving in, Danbury police said.

The first time he told police he was shown the apartment by Brian Barry, 41, of Roseland, NJ and the second time by both Brian Barry and wife Amber Barry, 30, also of Roseland.

Brian Barry reportedly told the victim that they were relocating to New Jersey and wanted to rent the apartment. He supplied the victim with a rental agreement and accepted $15,000, which included first month rent, last month rent, security deposit and a lump sum to lower the overall monthly rent, police said.

Shortly after the victim moved in he was notified that the Barry's did not own the apartment, and they were former tenants themselves.

The Danbury Police Department Detective Bureau was able to locate the couple in Roseland and got warrants for their arrest.

Both were placed under arrest in New Jersey and were extradited back to Danbury.

Brian Barry was charged with second-degree Larceny and held on a court set bond of $50,000.
