The arrest came at about 10:50 p.m. Sunday, police said, after officers found a 9-year-old, an 8-year-old and a 4-month-old in the car near the Copacabana Cafe.

A few minutes later, Edgar Hernandez, 40, came out of Copacabana, police said. Officers detected an odor of alcohol on Edgar as he explained that he stopped only for two minutes to collect money from a friend, police said.

After speaking to a witness, officers determined that Edgar had been inside the bar for over 10 minutes while the children were left unattended, police said.

The juveniles were turned over to a family member.

Hernandez, of Irving Place, was charged with three counts each of risk of injury to a minor and leaving a child under 12 years old unsupervised as well as one count each of interfering with an officer and hindering prosecution for initially providing a different date of birth.

He was released after posting $2,500 bond. Edgar is scheduled to appear in Danbury Superior Court on July 1.
