The fire was discovered just before 5 p.m. Thursday when the person stopped in Engine Company 23 on Osborne Street and told them there was smoke coming from the Deli across the street at 2 Germantown Road, said Firefighter James Gagliardo, communications officer.

When officers arrived, Lt. Doug Zaniewski quickly reported a working fire with heavy black smoke coming from the building. Deputy Chief Bernie Meehan arrived on scene with the rest of the responding units and established a command post, Gagliardo said.

Firefighters assisted seven occupants on the second floor out of the building and EMS evaluated them for any injuries.

A small fire was located in the kitchen and quickly extinguished, he added.

Danbury’s Fire Marshal’s Office was requested to respond and is investigating the cause which is undetermined at this time.
