The Miguels were honored for their life-saving actions with a Civilian Award by Danbury Professional Fire Fighters Local 801.

Lynda Miguel immediately pulled her vehicle over and yelled for the man to stop attacking the police officer. Karyssa Miguel called 911 and began giving the dispatcher details of the incident.

As Lynda Miguel began stepping out of her vehicle, Joseph Miguel stopped his mother, recognizing that it was an extremely dangerous situation.

The Miguel family then drove to the nearby Engine Company 23 Station and alerted firefighters there. They returned to the scene with Engine 23, with Karyssa Miguel providing information to dispatch throughout and remaining on the phone until the incident was under control.

Recently, the Miguel family was among about 50 people recognized by the Danbury Fire Department Local 801 during its annual awards and remembrance ceremony.

The ceremony was held at the Danbury Fire Department on 240 Main St. The purpose is to recognize individuals who performed outstanding acts of achievement.

Aside from the Civilian Award, other awards given out included: Exchange Club Firefighter of the Year, Unit Citation, Honorable Service Award, Award of Merit and Bravery Medal.

Tyler Bergemann, chairman of the awards committee, said that throughout the year, the awards committee receives submissions for people who have performed  notable acts.

"From civilians to department members, these people went above and beyond the call of duty or just happened to take part in an event while at the scene of an incident," Bergemann said, adding he has already received several submissions for next year's ceremony.

Having heart plays a big part in one's actions, Bergemann said. "Heart is sometimes what is needed to drive yourself to accomplish a goal set before you. Heart is someone who might not appear to have physical ability to accomplish a task alone but is able to do so because of his or her inner strength and drive.

"You have to have it in you to do something.  When the moment presents itself, you can freeze up and curl up in a ball," he said. "Or your can have the heart, drive and determination to take action.

"It's your choice."
