At about 3:25 p.m. Sunday, officers were dispatched to Lake Avenue and Segar Street for a road rage incident, police said.
The woman told officers that the incident began when she was backing out of a parking space at the Danbury Mall garage, police said.
A small black car sped past her and then stopped, she told police said. The male driver of the car, later identified as Marcos Marte-Nunez, 21, rolled down his window and yelled a derogatory word at her, she told police.
Marte-Nunez, of Town Hill Avenue, then followed her on Segar Street, which made her so nervous that she "chucked" her ice tea at his car, she told police.
When both were stopped at a red light on Lake Avenue by Segar Street, Marte-Nunez stopped his vehicle behind hers and got out, polcie said.
He opened her driver's side door and grabbed her by the neck, choking her until she was not able to breathe, police said.
Marte-Nunez also punched the victim's car several times, police said. He did not provide an account of what occurred and was placed under arrest, police said.
He was charged with third-degree strangulation, first-degree criminal mischief, driving a vehicle with intent to harass or intimidate and breach of peace. He was held on $2,500 bond.
