DANBURY, Conn. -- This summer, the Danbury Police Activities League surveyed over 500 local families in an effort to see what programs are most needed for their children.

The feedback from this needs assessment was the catalyst for the addition and expansion of some new programs at the Danbury PAL.

Survey results identified a need for more recreational activities that are less competitive in nature.

Parents want recreational programs without the formal and competitive team environment of a traditional team. They also see the value and importance in getting their children moving and active.

In response, PAL will be expanding its after-school open gym hours.

PAL will also be adding monthly middle school recreation nights. Dates are Sept. 25, Oct. 23, and Nov. 13.

These monthly events offer area middle schoolers a safe and fun place to spend their Friday nights.

There will also be an opportunity for parents to have a night out knowing their children are safe and active.

New activities for kids will include glow-in-the-dark dodgeball, volleyball, table tennis, music, ninja-type obstacle courses and more.

PAL's new executive director, Maura Keenan, said, "As a leader in local youth programming, we want to continue to grow and expand to meet the area's identified needs.

"We want to make decisions based on factual data, which we now have," she said.

"We are excited to add some new programs and see what participation will be like," she said.

Children ages 5-18 may join PAL for $25 per year and take advantage of open gym at the PAL center three days a week.

The PAL Center is at 35 Hayestown Road. Open gym hours are Mondays and Wednesdays from 3-5 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m.-noon
