The case began with police surveillance of the gas station at Liberty Avenue and South Street by members of the Special Investigations Division in response to complaints of drug-dealing in the area, police said.

During the surveillance, Erick Ortiz-Aguayo was seen making several drug transactions throughout the area, police said.

As he drove away from the area on Tuesday, Ortiz-Aguayo was followed by SID investigators until they could be assisted in stopping him by members of the Patrol Division, police said.

As he drove on Interstate 84 east, Ortiz-Aguayo disregarded the efforts of marked patrol cars that were signaling for him to stop and rammed into an unmarked police car, police said. He was subsequently stopped on I-84 in the area of the Brookfield/Newtown line but brought his vehicle to a stop only after it became disabled from ramming the unmarked police car, police said.

At that time, he was apprehended and taken into custody without further incident, police said.

Ortiz-Aguayo was found in possession of illegal drugs and remnants of destroyed evidence when his car was searched, police said.

He was charged with possession of narcotics, possession of narcotics with intent to sell, tampering with evidence, engaging in pursuit, operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license, and failure to obey a control signal. He was held on $150,000 bond.
