DANBURY, Conn. -- The Danbury Police Department is holding a “Prescription Drug Take Back Day” on Saturday, April 30, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Danbury Police Headquarters, 375 Main St.

The event will give area residents the chance to properly dispose of unwanted and expired medicines.

Police remind the public that medicines in the home are a leading cause of accidental poisoning, and flushed or improperly discarded medicines can end up polluting our waters.

According to police, rates of prescription drug abuse are alarmingly high: over half of the teens who abuse medicines get them from a family member or friend, including the home medicine cabinet, and often without consent.

While many types of medication can be disposed of at the take-back event, a few items, including needles, syringes and other sharps, along with any chemotherapeutic or radioactive medications, cannot be accepted.
