DANBURY, Conn. A growing number of complaints about prostitution in Danbury in recent months has led local authorities to step up police enforcement, which also has led to a spike in arrests.
The department has made more than a half-dozen arrests on prostitution charges in the past two weeks, all of which have been in an area around Spring, Beaver and New streets, according to Police Lt. Tom Michael.
Michael did not immediately have figures on the number of prostitution arrests for a similar period in past years, but he said efforts by the departments Special Investigations Division and the Community Conditions Unit are paying off.
Yes, were getting more complaints, and as we get more complaints we step up enforcement, he said.
Police arrested four people in a prostitution sweep last week and another two people the previous week.
Arrested in two separate incidents Sept. 6 were Tijuana Brown, 36, of 77 Rose St., Danbury, and Glenn Robinson, 52, of 23 Blue Bonnet Knoll, New Milford. Authorities spotted Robinson driving off with Brown after she approached his car near Spring and Beaver streets, and the two were pulled over a short distance away, Michael said.
Robinson was charged with misdemeanor patronizing a prostitute, while Brown was charged with misdemeanor prostitution, possession of narcotics and possession of a half-ounce of a controlled substance. Officers discovered she was carrying both heroin and marijuana.
Less than two hours later that same night, police arrested Dilsa Callado, 39, of no known address in Danbury, and Rojerio DaCosta, 41, of 84 Purcell Drive, Danbury, under similar circumstances as Brown and Robinson, Michael said.
DaCosta was charged with misdemeanor patronizing a prostitute, and Collado was charged with prostitution, possession of narcotics and other related charges. Police discovered Callado was carrying crack cocaine and paraphernalia to smoke it, Michael said.
In addition to prostitution, this is also an area where weve been making a lot of drug arrests, he said. As such, we welcome any calls or tips from the public because they are our eyes and ears.
