DANBURY, Conn. -- The Danbury Police Department has seen an increase in reports of fraudulent tax filings and is advising residents of steps to take if they are a victim of fraud.

If you suspect you are a victim of a fraudulent tax filing, take the following steps:

  • Go to the Police Department with your documentation and complete a police report.
  • Go to the IRS in Danbury and file an identity theft affidavit (Form 14039).
  • File a paper tax return.
  • Contact the Federal Trade Commission to file a complaint.
  • Contact one of the three credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian or TransUnion) to place a fraud alert on accounts. The one contacted will notify the two others; and close any financial accounts opened without the person's permission.
