The victim was identified as Wayne Bentley, 42, of West Haven, a statement from city spokesman Brett Broesder said Sunday evening.
Bentley died of an apparent drowning, but the cause of death hasn’t been definitively declared, Broesder said.
This was the 11th homicide of the year in Bridgeport, according to city officials, more than double the number at this point last year.
The Bridgeport Police Department received a call at 1:15 a.m. Saturday about a fight behind Chubby’s Bar & Grill at 3488 Fairfield Ave., he said.
A fight in the bar had spilled outside, and the two people involved fell into the waters of Ash Creek behind the restaurant, Broesder said.
Bridgeport Police, Fire, and AMR – as well as the Fairfield Police – responded. The Bridgeport Fire Department recovered Bentley from the water, he said.
The other person involved in the fight fled the scene, Broesder said. Police are actively searching for that person, he said.
No weapons are believed to have been involved with this incident, and there was no connection to the Gathering of the Vibes event this weekend in Bridgeport, he said.
This remains an active police investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Vincent Lariccia at 203-581-5229.
