Danbury police retracted an earlier report that the driver had died with an updated statement. An earlier statement reporting the death was incorrect, police said.

Chief Al Baker told the News-Times that the victim was alive, in critical condition and on life support at Danbury Hospital as of 4 p.m. Thursday.

The accident occurred just north of the intersection of Stadley Rough and Forty Acre Mountain Road at 10:42 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 3, police said.

A gray Toyota Corolla driven by Joseph E. Neumuller, of 15 High Rise Road, was traveling west on Stadley Rough Road, went off the right side of the roadway and hit a cluster of trees, police said.

Neumuller, who was the only occupant in the car, was unconscious at the scene, police said. He was removed from the wreckage and transported to Danbury Hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said. He was in critical condition Thursday afternoon, police said.

Anyone with information on the crash is asked to contact Officer Lance Brevard of the Traffic Division at 203-797-2156.
