Former Danbury Mayor Given Diversion Program In Domestic Assault Case

DANBURY, Conn. -- In a Tuesday court appearance, Gene Eriquez -- former mayor of Danbury for over a decade -- was granted diversionary options, including family violence education and substance abuse treatment, the News-Times has reported.

Eriquez is charged with a variety of crimes, including third-degree assault, after an incident where police assert he came home drunk, punched and pushed his wife, and tried to prevent her from calling for help, according to the News-Times. His wife currently has a restraining order against him.

In the hearing, the assistant state attorney said the options seemed appropriate, since it was Eriquez' first offense, the News-Times reported.

In May, Eriquez said he would "step aside" from his role as local party leader, but he hasn't resigned. The former mayor is due back in court in late September. Read the full News-Times article here.
