A routine traffic stop of a drunken driver led to drug charges for his passenger in Putnam County after he threatened state police over the weekend.

New York State Police troopers conducted a traffic stop at 2:15 a.m. Saturday after spotting 35-year-old Noval Baez of Danbury make vehicle and traffic violations while driving on I-84 in Southeast.

During the stop, troopers said that Baez had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath, leading to his arrest for driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor. Police said that his passenger, 49-year-old Brookfield resident Scott Craigue, had “what appeared to be cocaine residue on his nose, lap, and vehicle seat.”

Police said that it was later determined that Craigue was in possession of 9.3 grams of cocaine. He refused to exit his seat, and troopers said that he threatened to kick them in the head during an ensuing dispute. He was arrested and charged with a felony count of criminal possession of a controlled substance and obstruction of governmental administration, a misdemeanor.

Both men were arraigned in the Town of Southeast Court and remanded to the Putnam County Jail in lieu of $25,000 cash bail or $50,000 bond. Each is scheduled to appear in court next month to answer the charges.
