"Lockdowns lifted. Duck hunters in the Lake Kenosia area," Boughton said via Twitter.

The schools that were on lockdown were the Westside Middle School Academy and Mill Ridge Primary, which are side by side on School Ridge Road off Mill Plain Road, near Exit 4 of I-84. The schools are about a mile and a half from the lake. The Westside campus of Western Connecticut State University was also briefly locked down.

"Could be gun shots, could be backfire from a vehicle, we are not sure," Boughton said at about 8 a.m. via Twitter in response to a question. He called the lockdown a "precaution."

"Hopefully will have it cleared soon," he said.
