WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- A 34-year-old man struck and killed by a train on Tuesday night has been identified as Gacel L. Machado of White Plains, according to Metropolitan Authority Police.

Machado was struck by a southbound train at 8:52 p.m. Tuesday just south of the White Plains railroad station.

The locomotive engineer told police that Machado walked out from a wooded area west of the tracks and laid on the track in the path of the train, according to Metro-North spokesman Salvatore Arena.

The fatal accident caused delays of up to an hour on northbound trains on the Harlem Division line, and up to 30 minutes on southbound trains, Arena said.

Detectives notified Machado's mother and learned that he had suffered from depression and anxiety, according to a statement released on Wednesday by Metro-North.

He had threatened to take his own life in the past and had attempted to three weeks ago by overdosing on prescription medication, the statement said.
