A domestic dispute turned horribly wrong after a woman jumped out of a car in an effort to escape her husband who had attacked and forced her into a vehicle, according to Stamford Police.

Sgt. Robert Shawinsky said the department was alerted to the situation Thursday after a Fairfield Avenue resident called police about a woman being kidnapped.

Shawinsky said the woman was gone when officers arrived at the scene, but the witness told officers he saw two men running and a woman lying in the grass. One of the men running had called out to call the police because the woman was being kidnapped.

The witness then said one of the men, later identified as Celso Lopez-Hernandez, 37, of Stamford, had forced the woman into a car and drove away on Taylor Street.

Officers began canvassing the neighborhood looking for anyone who might know the woman and found her brother who said her husband, Lopez-Hernandez, had assaulted, and then kidnapped her.

The brother led officers to his sister who told them Lopez-Hernandez was jealous because he saw her walking home with a co-worker and had punched, kicked and choked her, police said.

She said she lost consciousness and woke up when her husband was loading her into the car, Shawinsky said.

When he wouldn't stop, she jumped from the moving vehicle, causing cuts, scrapes, and bruises, police added.

She was taken to Stamford Hospital for treatment.

Lopez-Hernandez was charged with assault, unlawful restraint, kidnapping, reckless endangerment, and strangulation. He is being held on $50,000 bond.
