Vamond "Wooley King" Elmore, 37, was wanted in connection with the May 15 killing of Jimmy Martinez.

Martinez, 43, was shot and killed on Leonard Street near Isaac Street at about 2 a.m. It was the first homicide in Norwalk since October 2012.

On May 27, a warrant was issued for Elmore's arrest on the charges of murder, criminal possession of a firearm, carrying a pistol without a permit and theft of a firearm.

Elmore was shot at a hotel in St. George, S.C., shortly after 11:15 a.m. Tuesday, police confirmed.

A task force of U.S. Marshals, along with members of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and the Dorchester County Sheriff's Office had approached the hotel looking for Elmore. The U.S. Marshals said Elmore was then seen fleeing the hotel room on foot and carrying a pistol.

Elmore did not obey commands to drop his weapon, the U.S. Marshals said, and turned toward the task force officers, who fired upon him. He sustained gunshot wounds and was taken to the Medical University of South Carolina Hospital, where he later died of his injuries, according to police.

"It is unfortunate that shots were required during the arrest of Mr. Elmore," Kelvin Washington, the U.S. Marshal for the District of South Carolina, said in a statement. "The citizens of South Carolina are now safer due to the hard work and dedication of our local law enforcement. I cannot be more proud of the cooperative efforts and interagency support of our state, local and federal law enforcement agencies."

Elmore was convicted in Connecticut in 2005 for unlawful possession of a weapon and ammunition by a convicted felon. He served 92 months for the offense. The U.S. Marshals said he was known to have extensive family ties to the Dorchester County area.
