Police: 11 Danbury Stores Sold Alcohol To Minors

DANBURY, Conn. -- Nearly a dozen Danbury package stores sold alcohol to minors in a recent Danbury police liquor compliance check, according to a police report.

The Governor’s Prevention Partnership, which also assisted in the operation, provided three youths who went into 44 package stores in the city and attempted to buy alcohol, police said.

Officers watched the youths as they entered the stores, police said. Of the 44 stores, 11 sold alcohol to the minors who were working with the police, police said.

The stores that allegedly sold alcohol to the minors include The Cave, Square Mall Wine and Liquor, Papi's Liquors, Espinal Grocery, MCJ Liquors, Railroad Spirit Shoppe, S&D Liquors, Stew Leonard's Discount Liquors, Gulliver's Wine, Tony Gallo's Hi-Way Package Store and Torres Grocery.

The checks are part of the state Liquor Control, Department of Consumer Protection and local law enforcements ongoing efforts to bring permit holders into compliance, and to prevent underage liquor sales.

The businesses that allegedly sold to a minor during this compliance operation will be brought before the Liquor Control Commission for an administrative hearing, at which time they will have an opportunity to address the charges, according to police.
