MONROE, Conn., -- A Monroe man has been charged with breach of peace after he made alarming references to school shootings on his Facebook account, Monroe Police said.

Peter Jennings, 21, was arrested Wednesday after his remarks alarmed people who notified police.

He was released a court-set bond of $25,000 and is scheduled to appear in court Thursday. He is a former Monroe student, police said.

The details of the post were forwarded by concerned citizens to the Monroe Police Facebook page and to the Monroe school administration on Tuesday night, police said.

Officers attempted to locate and speak to Jennings about the post, police said. After several attempts to locate Jennings, measures were taken by the Monroe Police Department and the Monroe Public Schools, police said. The police and the schools worked in cooperation to take every precaution to ensure the safety of the students at all town schools.

The use of social media to report concerns is a valuable option, police said, but accounts are not always monitored. In respect to timeliness and a quick response, the Monroe police say residents should always contact local police by phone when safety issues arise.
