An officer on routine patrol saw the manager from Fairfield Wine and Spirits on the Post Road chasing after a woman Saturday, police said.

When the officer told the woman to stop, she ran farther into traffic, police said. She was stopped in the parking lot of McDonald's with a bottle of Hennessy hidden under her sweater, police said.

Officers later stopped a man with a 3-year-old at the bus stop in front of the liquor store who was suspected of being with the fleeing woman, police said.

Police said they later determined that the man, Evan Brown, 30, and Lateefah Watson, 34, both of the Bronx, had worked together to steal several bottles of alcohol from the store.

Brown and Watson went into the store with the 3-year-old, police said. Brown began to ask the employees questions as Watson took bottles of Hennessy and Remy Martin before fleeing, police said.

A car registered to Watson was found near the bus stop and several other bottles of alcohol were found on the floor of the front passenger side of the car, police said. Both were taken into custody and taken to police headquarters.

While speaking with Brown and Watson, officers found that neither was the biological parent of the child and neither would initially give the name of a parent, police said. It was unclear why the child was in their custody, police said.

The Department of Children and Family Services arrived and took custody of the child. Later Saturday night, the department gave the grandmother custody of the child.

Brown and Watson were each charged with risk of injury to a minor, conspiracy to commit sixth-degree larceny and interfering with an officer. Watson was also charged with sixth-degree larceny.

Each was released on $2,500 bond and given a court date of Sept. 2.
