Police did not release the name of the woman who died.
The incident began when a 1986 Chevrolet food vending truck that was northbound on Hope Street became disabled near Hyde Street shortly before 7:30 a.m., police said. The driver, a 27-year-old Stamford man, was adding gasoline to the truck as his wife stood beside him on the travel side of the northbound lane, police said.
A 2003 Ford Explorer sport utility vehicle traveling south on Hope Street crossed over the double yellow line and struck both people standing next to the truck, police said. The Explorer was operated by Victor Medina-Fajardo, 32, of 873 Washington Blvd. in Stamford, police said.
The 34-year-old woman died a few hours later in Stamford Hospital, police said. The extent of injuries to her husband and of the Medina-Fajardo was not released by police said.
Medina-Fajardo had not been charged as of Saturday evening. The police investigation into the death is ongoing.
