The Westport Fire Department received a call for an automatic fire alarm at the home at 7:33 p.m. Wednesday, fire officials said. While firefighters were en route, they received a 911 call from the residence reporting a fire in their home. They were advised to evacuate and wait in their front yard.

When firefighters arrived, they fund a blaze on the first floor of the single-family home. Due to access issues caused by snow and ice, they could not get fire apparatus close to the house, according to fire officials. They had to stretch 850 feet of hose from the closest hydrant to the house to attack the fire. Once the hose was in place, they were able to quickly extinguish the fire.

To ensure that there were sufficient resources to fight the fire, to stretch a secondary hose and to vent the house of smoke, the Westport Fire Department requested assistance from several neighboring communities.

Four engines, one ladder truck, four chiefs and two fire marshals from the Westport Fire Department responded, as well as one engine from Wilton, two engines and a chief from Weston, a ladder truck from Norwalk and air support from Danbury. A total of 42 firefighters and officers responded to the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Westport Fire Marshal's office. No residents or firefighters were injured, and the residents were able to take shelter in a neighbor's home. The last fire unit cleared the scene at 10:36 p.m.

The Westport Fire Department is reminding residents of the importance of clearing fire hydrants of snow and ensuring clear access to your home. Snow and ice can hamper firefighting efforts, and clearing access will enable firefighters to work quickly and safely.
