State Reps. Jan Giegler (R-138) and Dan Carter (R-2) along with state Sen. Michael McLachlan (R-24) volunteered Wednesday as bell ringers for the Salvation Army, raising $14,334.83. They stood outside the Danbury Wal-Mart as they wished people happy holidays and collected donations. Wal-Mart matched their collection dollar for dollar bringing, the total donation to $28,669.66.
“The money will go a long way toward helping local families, thanks to the Salvation Army and their efforts,” Giegler said.
Last year, Republican House representatives and Danbury Wal-Mart raised $3,209.08 for the Salvation Army.
“We are so lucky to have such an incredible turnout – an enormous thank-you goes out to those who took time out of their busy schedules to stop by, say hello and contribute,” said Carter. “With the help of Wal-Mart’s matching donation, we’re a big step closer to bringing a merrier Christmas to local families in need.”
During similar bell-ringing events between 2009 and 2013, Republican House representatives raised more than $76,000, which Wal-Mart matched.
“I’m always impressed by the outpouring and support we receive when helping the Salvation Army with their kettle drive but this year I am humbled to know the community came together and more than quadrupled last year’s total,” Giegler said.
“We sincerely thank all who donated to help people in need,” McLachlan said. “Through the Red Kettle Campaign, one person really can make a difference in someone else’s life.”
The Salvation Army thanked the three lawmakers for their efforts.
“It's common these days to hear more negative than positive news about the men and women who represent us in government. But here in Danbury is it just as common to see those men and women out in the community making a difference,” said Maj. Todd Hughes of the Danbury Salvation Army. “Through the giving of their time they have made a difference in our community by helping The Salvation Army help those who are in the most need this holiday season.”
