Danbury Voters Will Pick State Reps, Decide On $20 Million In Spending

DANBURY, Conn. -- As Danbury voters head to the polls Tuesday, they will be casting ballots for close-to-home candidates who represent the city in the state's General Assembly as well as on whether to approve a $20 million bond measure to pay for road repairs and other public works projects.

The city of Danbury includes five districts in the state House of Representatives. 

  • In District 2, Democratic challenger Candace Fay is facing off against Republican incumbent Dan Carter. This seat also includes part of Redding.
  • In District 108, Republican incumbent Richard Smith is running unopposed.
  • In District 109, Democratic incumbent David Arconti if facing off against Republican challenger Joshua Stanley.
  • In District 110, Democratic incumbent Bob Godfrey is facing Republican challanger Frank Goncalves
  • In District 138, incumbent Republican Janice Giegler is facing a challenge from Democrat Henry Hall. This district also includes part of Ridgefield.

In the state Senate race for District 24, incumbent Republican Michael McLachlan is running unopposed. McLachlan, a Danbury resident, is seeking his fourth term as a state senator. His district also includes parts of Bethel, New Fairfield and Sherman in addition to Danbury. 

Voters in Danbury will also vote on a city referendum on whether to authorize a $20 million appropriation and bond for various public improvements. 

The appropriation and bond money includes funds for the following projects: 

  • $1 million to upgrade and replace equipment in the Public Safety Communications Network.
  • $6.5 million for the road reconstruction. It includes funds for rebuilding, paving, curbing, guardrail, resurfacing, lighting, and beautification projects for city streets, parking lots and easements. 
  • $3 million for the Public Works Equipment and Vehicle Replacement Program.
  • $4 million for engineering for the bridge repairs and replacement. 
  • $5.5 million to repair and replace roofs on city-owned buildings.

For probate judge, the only candidate on the ballot is incumbent Republican Diane Yamin. For registrars of voters, Democrat Margaret Gallo and Republican Mary Ann Doran are running unopposed.  

In the race for the 5th District in the U.S. House of Representatives, voters will choose between U.S. Rep. Elizabeth Esty, the Democratic incumbent, and Republican challenger Mark Greenberg.  

The 5th District spreads across much of western Connecticut and also includes Bethel, Brookfield, New Fairfield, Newtown, and Sherman as well as seven towns in Hartford County, six towns in New Haven County and 22 towns in Litchfield County.

In the race for governor, Danbury residents will join voters statewide in choosing between incumbent Democrat Dannel Malloy and Republican challenger Tom Foley. Other statewide races include lieutenant governor, comptroller, secretary of the state, attorney general and treasurer.
