Danbury's Rep. Carter Introduces Bill To Reduce Drug Abuse

DANBURY, Conn. – Danbury Rep. Dan Carter (R-2) introduced a bill Thursday in Hartford that would help prevent prescription drug abuse. The bill, HB 5484, would require a doctor’s written consent to use a generic substitution for any drug with a tamper-resistant formula, according to a press release.

“This proposal will significantly reduce the abuse potential for drugs that are highly addictive, dangerous and often fuel the substance abuse problem in this country,” Carter said. “We must take steps to ensure providers have the choice to prescribe tamper resistant formulations and prevent risks to public health and safety. This policy is a common sense solution and would be an effective abuse deterrent for substance abuse.”

Carter is the Ranking Member of the General Law Committee, which oversees matters of consumer protection. The proposed bill would prevent pharmacists and insurance companies from switching the prescribed brand name drugs for a generic option that is easier to alter and abuse.

Carter represents the State House of Representative’s 2nd District, which includes parts of Danbury, Bethel, Newtown and Redding. He also serves on the Banks and Energy and Technology Committees.
