"We need to make smart, well thought out decisions, taking reasonable precautions to eliminate future risk, preventing another harmful tragedy,” Giegler said. "Mental health should play a large role in this task force's discussions as gun violence cannot be our main focus. I believe we need to give it the common sense due diligence."

The task force is made up of three working groups that will focus on gun control, mental health and school safety. Giegler, who is the ranking member on the General Assembly’s Public Safety and Security Committee will be part of the gun control group, according to the release.

The groups will evaluate current laws and recommend new legislation to address the three issues of gun violence, school security and access to mental health services. Officials said they hope to deliver recommendations to the Senate and House leadership and produce a bipartisan emergency certified bill by the end of February.

The task force is scheduled to have its first full meeting Friday.

Giegler represents the 138th district, which includes Danbury, New Fairfield and Ridgefield.
