Esty's district includes Danbury and much of northwestern Connecticut.
Esty, a Democrat, partnered with Thompson, a California Democrat, during the formation of the task force after the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, which is in her district. Thompson, Esty, and the other vice chairs make up the task force’s leadership team.
In February 2013, the task force announced a comprehensive set of policy principles designed to reduce gun violence while respecting the 2nd amendment rights of law-abiding Americans.
“I’m honored to continue to serve as Vice Chair of the U.S. House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force,” said Esty. “The scourge of gun violence is devastating our communities. Congress has shamefully failed to act on commonsense reforms, like expanded background checks and stricter punishments for illegal gun trafficking and straw purchasing.
"These reforms protect the 2nd amendment rights of law-abiding gun owners, enjoy overwhelming support from the American people, and will save lives. I look forward to continuing to work with my colleagues in Congress —particularly new members — to keep our children and our communities safe from gun violence.”
Thompson commented on Esty's involvement with the task force.
“Since coming to Congress and joining our task force, Elizabeth Esty has been a stalwart advocate of gun violence prevention,” Thompson said. “She brings both a passionate and personal voice to the leadership table, and I look forward to continuing our work together this Congress as we push for commonsense reforms like expanded background checks.”
