Esty joins Chairman Bill Shuster (R-PA), Ranking Member Peter DeFazio (D-OR), and Vice Chairman John J. Duncan, Jr. (R-TN) as a member of the committee’s leadership.

“I’m incredibly honored by the opportunity to serve in this new role,” Esty said. “Rebuilding America’s infrastructure is an economic and national-security imperative. Both Democrats and Republicans, including President Trump, have identified our Committee’s work as an area for bipartisan cooperation. I can’t wait to get started on our mission to revitalize transportation systems and promote good-paying jobs in Connecticut and across the country.”

“I was proud to work with my colleagues on the Committee in the last Congress on a bipartisan transportation package that has allowed desperately needed upgrades in Connecticut, like the Waterbury I-84 corridor project, to get off the ground,” Esty added. “Together, in a bipartisan way, we strengthened Buy America requirements, eased federal restrictions for New England dairy farmers, and launched new initiatives to support sustainable fuels. I’m excited to build on that progress to achieve our shared goal of making America’s transit systems the envy of the world.”

Esty has served on the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure since entering Congress in 2013.

In the previous Congress, Esty authored several bipartisan amendments to the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation (FAST) Act, the long-term surface transportation package signed into law by former President Barack Obama. Esty’s amendments included in the final legislation included measures to increase Buy America domestic content requirements, ease federal restrictions on milk transport, establish national sustainable fueling corridors along major highways, and safeguard pollinator habitat on transportation rights-of-way.

In addition, Esty is the founder of the bipartisan Corrosion Prevention Caucus along with Rep. Pete Olson (R-TX). The caucus is dedicated to finding solutions to prevent corrosion in American infrastructure systems.

The House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure has jurisdiction over all modes of transportation: aviation, maritime and waterborne transportation, highways, bridges, mass transit, and railroads. The Committee also has jurisdiction over other aspects of our national infrastructure, such as clean water and waste water management, the transport of resources by pipeline, flood damage reduction, Brownfields remediation, the management of federally owned real estate and public buildings, the development of economically depressed rural and urban areas, disaster preparedness and response, and hazardous materials transportation.

Esty represents Bethel, Brookfield, Danbury, New Fairfield, Newtown and Sherman along with much of northwestern Connecticut.
