DANBURY, Conn. -- Elizabeth Esty won re-election Tuesday after an aggressive campaign battle against Republican challenger Mark Greenberg to represent the 5th District in Congress, which includes Danbury.

Esty was the one-term incumbent Democrat in the 5th District. She was joined on stage by her husband, Mark, and their three children in claiming victory at the Coco Key Water Resort Hotel in Waterbury.

"There are things that need fixing in this country," Esty said. "It's not as glamorous, but we can fix things. ... Please join me in my work to fix what's wrong with our communities. ... We work together to make our communities better."

Esty and Greenberg had attacked each other in ads on issues such as Social Security and partisan politics. He conceded in a short speech Tuesday night just before Esty gave her victory speech.

The 5th Congressional District covers most of northwest Connecticut, including Danbury in the southwestern part of the district.

The district also includes Bethel, Brookfield, New Fairfield, Newtown, and Sherman as well as seven towns in Hartford County, six towns in New Haven County and 22 towns in Litchfield County.

All election results are unofficial until certified by the secretary of the state.
