Smith, a Republican, voted for legislation that required an immediate ignition interlock device for anyone who was arrested for intoxicated driving and had his or her license suspended. He also voted for harsher penalties for anyone who refused to use the device.

Smith was commended last year by MADD as well. He said he hopes the state legislature will help to save lives, keep roads safe and provide individuals with a way to get assistance in order to become or continue being productive members of society.

“I am humbled and grateful for the recognition,” Smith said. “Too often, public safety is compromised when someone gets behind the wheel after drinking. I am proud to stand in support of strengthening DUI laws. These policies will provide safe roadways and a brighter future for Connecticut.”

MADD Connecticut Executive Director Janice Heggie Margolis said the organization’s Public Policy Award “is presented to individuals who have dedicated their time and commitment to promoting safe and sober driving through effective legislation.”

Smith represents the 108th General Assembly district, which covers parts of Danbury, New Fairfield, New Milford and Sherman.
