Politico Examines Why Trump Brought Campaign To Blue State Of Connecticut

FAIRFIELD, Conn. — Many political observers were surprised when Republican presidential Donald Trump decided to hold a campaign rally last weekend at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield.

Donald Trump may be behind in polls in Connecticut, but the Republican presidential candidate was greeted Saturday by cheering supporters in a rally at Sacred Heart University.

The state of Connecticut has not voted for the GOP since 1988 and every major seat in the Nutmeg State is held by a Democrat. And a June poll from Quinnipiac University showed Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton with 45 percent of the vote in Connecticut, leading Trump with 38 percent.

So why did Trump stage a full campaign rally in a blue state on Saturday evening?

According to Politico, Republican leaders objected and said Trump should be spending time and resources in states where he has a chance of winning and can swing the election, such as Florida and Ohio.

In his speech at SHU, Trump did his best to make points in Connecticut, criticizing General Electric's decision to move out of Fairfield, Gov. Dannel Malloy's budget and policies, and the state's loss of manufacturing jobs.
