FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- In the first major poll since the Republican primary last week, GOP challenger Tom Foley is leading incumbent Democrat Dannel Malloy as they head into a gubernatorial rematch this November.

Malloy trails Foley by seven percentage points in a poll from Rasmussen Reports .

In the new statewide telephone survey of likely Connecticut voters, Foley got 45 percent of the vote vs. Malloy’s 38 percent. A total of 7 percent prefer another candidate, and 10 percent are undecided.

Foley, who received the endorsement of the state Republican Party, topped Senate Minority Leader John McKinney in the GOP primary on Aug. 12. This was the first poll taken since Foley's victory set up his rematch against Malloy.

Foley lost in the 2010 race by fewer than 6,500 votes.

Foley, who lives in Greenwich, is the former ambassador to Ireland and a businessman. Malloy is a former mayor of Stamford now in his first term as governor.

The survey of 750 likely voters in Connecticut was conducted on Aug. 18 to 19 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is percentage points. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research.

In a Quinnipiac Poll conducted in March, Foley and Malloy were tied at 42 percent of the vote each. Qunnipiac has not conducted a poll in the Connecticut gubernatorial race since that one.
