The institute is home to the latest cancer, proteomics, and Lyme disease research, including the first Lyme disease data registry in the country.
The team of scientists included Dr. Matt Miller, chief medical officer; Dr. Paul Fiedler, chairman of pathology; Dr. Cristiano Ferlini, chair of cancer research; and Thomas Rutherford, Ph.D., the network physician director of cancer services.
Esty has been a longtime supporter of the institute's work, securing a two-year, $600,000 grant from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease Small Business Innovation Research Program in August.
The grant is intended to go toward research on better Lyme disease tests, as roughly 30 percent of cases are misdiagnosed, delaying treatment in the process.
“The Western Connecticut Health Network’s Biomedical Research Institute is a trailblazer with its cutting-edge cancer and Lyme disease research,” said Esty. “I was impressed by its state-of-the-art facility, particularly its ‘open bench’ laboratories that encourage cooperation and coordination across research disciplines.”
“We are grateful for the congresswoman’s support and that of our very generous donors that provide the means for us fulfill our mission and bring these new pathways to those we care so much about,” Ferlini added.
