Harding, who will now represent House District 107, defeated Democrat Howard Lasser, a former member of the Brookfield Board of Education, in the race for the empty seat.
“I am certainly very happy to have so much support in this district,” Harding told the News Times. “And I am going to reach out to anyone who didn’t vote for me, Republican or Democrat, to bring this district together.”
Former state Rep. David Scribner had endorsed Harding to replace him. Scribner, a Danbury Republican, stepped aside in January to take a position with the state Department of Consumer Protection, triggering the special election.
Harding has said that he plans to focus on the economy and jobs, and that he will pursue a pro-business, pro-growth agenda.
He is a nearly lifelong resident of the district who graduated from Brookfield High School and Albertus Magnus College. He received his J.D. from the New York School of Law and is currently in private practice in Danbury. In addition to the Brookfield Board of Education, he is also active in youth sports programs.
Harding also received the endorsement of Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton, state Sen. Clark Chapin of New Milford, and state Rep. Dan Carter of Danbury.
"I commend Howard Lasser on a hard-fought battle in a tough district. We are grateful that Howard stepped up as a candidate to campaign on our Democratic values," said Connecticut Democratic Party Chairman Nick Balletto in a statement.
