DANBURY, Conn. - At the party’s nominating convention on Wednesday, May 14, Richard A. Smith was unanimously selected as the Republican candidate for State Representative in the 108th District.

Smith serves at Republican Leader of the General Assembly’s Labor Committee and is seeking re-election for a third two-year term.

Rep. Smith, who lives and practices law in New Fairfield, won the support of all delegates, saying he was “grateful and honored by the support as I seek to again represent the 108th District.”

“With multi-billion-dollar budget deficits projected for next year, I will continue to push for common sense economic principles that reduce the size and scope of state government so that families and employers are not dogged by perpetual tax increases,” Rep. Smith said. “My focus remains on creating a tax and regulatory climate that allows employers to grow and residents to have private sector job opportunities. The future of our community is bright, and I look forward to continuing the fight for our towns in Hartford.”

The 108th District covers the towns of New Fairfield, Sherman, New Milford and Danbury.

Rep. Smith has played an instrumental role in creating legislation that reduces the cost of living and doing business in Connecticut, particularly initiatives that drive economic development and help employers expand and create jobs. His bi-partisan partnerships and pragmatic approach has led to legislative successes including the creation of the Small Business Express Program, a reprieve from state gasoline taxes, a comprehensive education reform package and required use of a low-cost test for congenital heart defects in babies.

Rep. Smith added, “I look forward to running a campaign grounded by issues that are important to residents as we seek to ensure the district remains a community of opportunity.”

The election will be held on Tuesday, November 4th.
