The elections will be for the 23rd Senate District, which covers portions of Bridgeport and Stratford; the 107th House District, which covers all of Brookfield and portions of Bethel and Danbury; and the 129th House District, which covers a portion of Bridgeport.
The Senate seat was most recently held by Andres Ayala, a Democrat. The Bridgeport seat was held by Auden Grogins, a Democrat, and and the Danbury seat by David Scribner, a Republican. While all three legislators won their most recent elections to serve during the 2015 legislative session, they chose not to be sworn into office this week and vacancies were declared.
Scribner has accepted a post as a commissioner in the Department of Consumer Protection's Liquor Control Division. Ayala will be the new commissioner of the state Department of Motor Vehicles, the first Latino to hold the post. Grogins was nominated to be a judge on the state Superior Court. Gov. Dannel P. Malloy nominated all three to the new posts in state government.
Under state law, the governor is required to issue a Writ of Special Election within 10 days of a vacancy in the General Assembly, and a special election must be held 46 days after it is issued.
