DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. Having won 42 games in a row as a player at Dobbs Ferry High School, Alan Straub knows what it means to have football on the mind all the time. Born and raised in Dobbs Ferry, Straub said now that his kids are playing he wanted to get involved and help bring up the next wave of local athletes.
Now that my kids are in the program I want to get involved and get more people involved and really get it back to where it was, Straub said. The current regime lasted 18 years and its time for us to step up.
As the next head of the youth football program, Straub said plenty of locals have come out to support the effort of the changing of the guard.
We got about 30 people in different committees with different responsibilities, Straub said. We just need to get organized. The goal is to have a big time fundraiser every year so we can get new uniforms, head to toe helmets, shoulder pads, everything. So weve got to raise probably $10,000.
Straub said teaching the young athletes about local community service is the first step of the program. As he was saying this on Saturday, senior captains of this years state championship team could be seen behind him scrubbing and cleaning up old equipment at Gould Field.
We want to do exactly what theyre doing, he said.
Straub also said he wants to have the younger players learning the same type of system the varsity team uses. Learning similar plays will help make the transition seamless for the young athletes.
Were going to set up a coaching clinic for the kids, said varsity head coach Jim Moran. Its huge for the varsity program if they already know half of it.
